Marco Polo's book, The Description of the World, chronicles
his 24-year odyssey to the court of Kublai Khan and has since inspired
generations of travellers and adventurers.
Seven hundred years later, using Polo's book as a travel guide,
National Geographic photographer Michael Yamashita embarks on an
adventure of his own, tracing the footsteps of the great explorer
and gathering new evidence on the mystery surrounding Polo's adventure.
Travelling deep into China, to many, rarely visited, Mike Yamashita
reveals that the way of life described by Polo following his 17-year
epic adventure in this country remains largely unchanged. In this
three episode series, Yamashita explores a land time has forgotten,
and in the process focuses on some of the most culturally diverse
and visually spectacular regions of Polo's journey.
