television series to raise the awareness of indigenous cultures with National
Geographic Explorer-in-Residence, celebrated anthropologist and writer, Wade
Davis.
Across Asia, a series of multi-media awareness campaigns covering on-air
vignettes, on-ground events, education initiatives, online elements and print
promotions will take place from 21 April - 1 May 2007 covering India,
Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Screenings will take place in India
and Singapore while education outreach presentations will take place in
Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan and Hong Kong. In Malaysia, Davis will personally
officiate the opening of a photography exhibition featuring a special selection
of photographs from his vast collection taken over the course of 25 years of
his exploration.
Mr Avinash Himatsinghani, Vice President - Advertising Sales and Partnerships,
National Geographic Channel Asia said, "Over the past few years, National
Geographic Channel's partnership with DHL has evolved and grown with each
subsequent campaign. Light at the Edge of the World is a premiere series for
the channel, enhanced further by Wade's involvement. Together with DHL, we
celebrate Wade's mission in going ALL THE WAY to the far ends of our world to
showcase indigenous cultures and how they find ways not only survive, but
thrive amidst modernization."
"DHL applauds and shares Wade Davis' passion in celebrating and preserving the
diversity of cultures. Similarly, DHL is passionate in our pursuit to be
valuable partners for our customers and to make them successful. DHL is proud
to support Wade and the National Geographic Channel in creating greater
awareness and educating the public on the importance of sustaining cultural
diversity, as well as documenting and preserving the heritage of indigenous
cultures", said Mr Dan McHugh, Senior Vice President - Commercial, DHL Express
Asia Pacific. "This partnership aligns well with DHL's Corporate Sustainability
Program to contribute to the communities in which we operate in."
"Brand associations between the two companies (National Geographic Channel and
DHL) are strong. Both are committed to excellence in their respective fields.
By partnering Wade Davis in his endeavours to preserve cultural diversity, DHL
is able to emphasise its own ability to know the world, country by country,
like a local", noted Ms Connie Chan, Managing Director for Mediaedge:cia (MEC),
the agency that worked with National Geographic Channel to create this
partnership.
Wade Davis, a National Geographic's Explorer-in-Residence, is best known for his
groundbreaking research on cultures and their use of plants, language and myth.
He has also written several books including The Serpent and the Rainbow,
Passage of Darkness, and One River based on his exploration and discovery in
Haiti and the Amazon rainforest.
The four-part television series, Light at the Edge of the World, based on the
book by Wade Davis, follows him from the foothills of the Himalayas to the
desolate tundra of the Northern Arctic as he explores how four indigenous
cultures are adapting to preserve their unique heritage.
"Light at the Edge of the World is a celebration of the wonder of humanity's
greatest legacy, an ethnosphere of brilliance and genius that gives form to all
thoughts and dreams, ideas and myths, institutions and inspirations, brought
about by the human imagination," adds Wade Davis.
The series will air exclusively on National Geographic Channel in Asia, every
Monday, from 30 April 2007 @ 9pm (SIN/HKG/MAL). For more information, visit
